Livestream registration for Right Here, Right Now summit now open Megan Maneval Tue, 05/06/2025 - 13:35

Registration is now open for the 2025 Right Here, Right Now global climate summit.

Hosted by the University of Oxford in partnership with UN Human Rights, the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance, the International Universities Climate Alliance, CU �� and co-host universities worldwide, this summit aims to address critical issues at the intersection of climate change and human rights.

The global assembly will commence June 4 at 1 p.m. MST with a launch event at University of Oxford and will feature a series of discussions and presentations from leading experts and advocates. Following the kickoff, co-host universities will hold a week of local events themed around climate change, human rights and climate justice. Register for the livestream.

Locally on June 5, NPR journalist Lakshmi Singh will host a series of impactful discussions with CU �� researchers on the human rights impacts of a changing environment, including with respect to pollution, water security and human migration. The discussion will feature keynote remarks from Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a global advocate for the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, including their right to health.

A discussion among Chancellor Justin Schwartz, Vice Chancellor for Sustainability Andrew Mayock and Sustainability Research Initiative Executive Director Jane Zelikova will headline the 32nd annual Campus Sustainability Summit, taking place April 22–23 at the University Memorial Center.

All Buffs and community members are invited to attend the two-day event, which presents many opportunities to share, learn about and celebrate the wide array of accomplishments, challenges and new ideas related to sustainability in the CU �� community.

Leadership Perspectives on Building Resilience and Accelerating Impact

Join Schwartz in conversation with Zelikova and Mayock. They will discuss their shared visions and map out the path forward for campus sustainability and climate action.

Advancing Campus Climate Action

An engaging discussion on the latest developments in CU ��’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and the strategies driving sustainable change and solutions across campus.

Student Perspectives

How CU Can Reduce Emissions: Undergraduate students will present ideas for how the university can reduce its carbon emissions in student and parent travel, business travel, transportation and waste.

Community Resilience: Disaster Preparedness Basics

This workshop will lay out how to plan for individual and community needs considering the intensifying climate crisis and increasing frequency of extreme weather events.

STARS: Mapping Priorities and Measuring Impact

In this session, staff will share key data and performance metrics from the current Gold-rated STARS report and recommendations for campus actions and strategy.

Growing a Resilient Food System: Community, Collaboration and Creativity

This panel of local change leaders will explore solutions and opportunities, and share innovative programs that support both food security and nutrition.

Co-designing Interdisciplinary Pathways for Climate, Sustainability and Justice

This panel session will showcase the ongoing development of academic pathways in climate, sustainability and justice for undergraduate students.

Closing the Loop: Circular Economy Solutions

Join CU �� and city of �� staff to explore successes, opportunities, challenges and ideas to achieve a circular economy.

The 10th annual Stand Up for Climate Comedy celebrates the power of comedy to ignite climate awareness and action featuring professional comedians and CU students.
The New Venture Challenge Finals has CU’s top entrepreneurs pitching their innovative business ventures live to a panel of judges and competing for a share of $325,000.

CU faculty, staff, students and academic leaders will gather April 21 for a daylong summit focused on how CU �� can achieve student success, culture change and a thriving environment for all by making equity a shared responsibility across all roles on campus.

Many Voices: Co-creating CU �� is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Leadership Support and Programming and CU ��’s shared governance organizations.

The summit will feature Adrianna Kezar, director of the Pullias Center of Higher Education at the University of Southern California and Dean’s Professor of Leadership and Wilbur-Kieffer Professor of Higher Education at USC; along with Ángel de Jesus González, assistant professor of educational leadership at Fresno State University.

“We are excited to see how these workshops can add to the work we’ve been doing on breaking down barriers and improving the partnership between staff and faculty on campus,” said Jessica Sandoval, Staff Council co-chair and Outreach and Events Committee co-chair. “We invite all those invested in this relationship and in making CU �� a better place to attend.”

Provost Russell Moore is also encouraging of participation.

“We have a responsibility to create an environment that fosters success and belonging at all levels,” said Moore. “I’m committed to cementing a partnership of equals between faculty and staff in service to students. Professors Kezar and González will show us research-identified ways to share our responsibility for student success, create accountability, meet challenges and make progress together.”

Senior Vice Chancellor for Leadership Support and Programming Sonia DeLuca Fernández lauded CU ��’s shared governance organizations—the �� Faculty Assembly, CU �� Staff Council, CU Student Government and the Government of Professional and Graduate Students—for co-sponsoring the summit.

“These vital shared governance organizations realize that how a university leads—with equity and mattering at the center—is critical to executing our mission,” DeLuca Fernández said. “Committing to shared equity leadership is how co-creating the university begins.”

Summit schedule

The summit offers seminars for faculty, staff and students on creating culture change through shared equity leadership, creating accountability for shared equity leadership and charting progress and meeting challenges.

A daylong workshop featuring the University of Southern California’s Adrianna Kezar will focus on creating and sustaining shared equity leadership to support student success.

The Office of Academic and Learning Innovation continues its free, public speaker series ��Talks: Insights from Education Innovators on Thursday, March 20, with a workshop and a presentation by guest speaker, Tawnya Means, assistant dean for education innovation at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Boosting Faculty Effectiveness and Learning Outcomes with AI Innovations Workshop

Means hosts this interactive workshop where faculty members explore how generative AI can revolutionize teaching and learning, enhancing student engagement, critical thinking and personalized learning experiences.

About Tawnya Means

Means serves as the assistant dean for educational innovation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She brings a wealth of experience to her teaching and seminars, contributing knowledge across diverse fields such as entrepreneurship, strategy, technology, and leadership in remote teams. Her multidisciplinary approach enriches her instructional practice, as she utilizes her expertise in course design to create engaging and inclusive learning environments that foster academic growth.

In addition to her teaching, Means has led seminars in online and blended education and provided consultations on teaching and technology. Her research interests are centered on online and blended learning, active learning, learning space design, and the use of technology in education. She is dedicated to exploring innovative methods to enhance the learning experience and ensure equitable access to digital resources.

��Talks hosts dynamic conversations on the CU �� campus with experts exploring groundbreaking innovations that are transforming and expanding the landscape of learning.
