Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword we inserted into our organization’s name. I’m continually impressed by the way each of our divisions embodies sustainability in everything we do on this campus -- from reducing pesticide use, to building and designing greener buildings, to reducing energy use, to experimenting with less toxic cleaning products, and working with Staples and UPS to become more efficient, cleaner and safer as we deliver packages across our campus. The list goes on.

Recently, we’ve pulled our weight on the national stage as well, thanks in large part to the efforts of Heidi VanGenderen, our chief sustainability officer. In July, as part of CU º£½ÇÉçÇø’s membership in the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3), we hosted a Leadership Forum on Climate Solutions, convening academic leaders, local and state government officials, and stakeholders from the nonprofit and private sectors, to engage regarding collaborative action we can take to achieve our respective carbon reduction goals. The report from that forum was included in an overall UC3 progress report presented earlier this month at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco.

Just this month, the university’s status as a sustainability leader was again recognized with an invitation to become a founding member of the U.S. chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.Ìý

Finally, within the Office of Infrastructure and Sustainability, we’ve re-aligned a few positions as we work to continue enhancing our sustainable operations practices in-house and help drive the conversation across campus. Sustainability and Resiliency Manager Ed von Bleichert will now report to Heidi along with Senior Transportation Demand Management Program Manager David Cook, who moves over from Transportation Services. Sustainable Transportation Coordinator Clark Rider, meanwhile, will now report to Ed.

I hope you all feel a sense of pride for the achievements we’ve made in the sustainability realm at scales both small and large. While we know we still have huge opportunities and a lot of good work in this arena ahead of us, these efforts are just a few of the many ways you contribute each day to the chancellor’s strategic imperatives of leadership, innovation and positively impacting humanity.
