As Hurricane Irma set a course for Florida last month, the call went out to Incident Management Team members across the state of Colorado to see who would be available to help in the Sunshine State’s moment of need. One of Infrastructure and Safety's own, Deon Pfenning, program manager for emergency management plans at the CU Police Department, was one of the folks who answered the call. He deployed with the Colorado group, as he did last year to assist with the response efforts to flooding in Ellicott City, Md.��We sat down with Pfenning recently to hear about his deployment to Georgia and what he learned in this Q and A.

The Grounds and Recycling Operations Center, affectionately known by those who work there as the "G-ROC", and the East District Energy Plant (EDEP) were both recently awarded LEED Gold status by the United States Green Building Council. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a rating system that assesses sustainable design and construction. LEED Gold is the second-highest certification a building or project can receive behind platinum. The two new certifications bring to 21 the total number of buildings on the CU �������� campus that have achieved LEED Gold or better, either as new construction or following major renovations. The G-ROC opened in 2015 and is home to our outdoor services and waste management��teams, as well as integrated pest management. The East District Energy Plant, which opened in 2014, is home to Utility and Energy Services and generates the steam production��that provides heating and cooling for��much of campus.

The���������� Police Department (CUPD)��held a for six sworn personnel and three civilians��at the �������� Municipal Court. The Honorable Judge Linda Cooke led the ceremony, which included the promotion of two new commanders, Paula Balafas and Michael Lowry. Congratulations to all on the promotions! The work you do is vital to ensuring a safe campus environment for all who live, work and study here.��

While the work we do in Infrastructure and Safety helps keep campus operating smoothly on a day-to-day basis, it's important to recognize that all of our efforts also leave lasting impressions for decades to come. Arts and Sciences Magazine as the building turns 20 this year��and the transformational impacts it has had on CU ��������'s geosciences program since opening. Says one professor in the story:��"I think that’s where architecture can actually play an active role in the educational program and the enterprise of the university. It can set the tone and influence how people feel about the unit."

In case you missed the , Tim Golden and his crew at the Distribution Center have begun handling UPS package delivery for departments on campus, effective��Monday, Oct. 2. The move follows the Distribution Center's agreement to handle on-campus delivery for Staples last year, which has gone well. The change is also part of a bigger effort in Infrastructure and Safety to holistically examine the supply chain on campus and make��it more efficient, sustainable and safe.

Two years plus the couple of summers I worked in high school.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I enjoy playing video games. Mostly RPGs (role-playing games).

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
Two weeks before a vacation to Moab, 14-year-old me drove my Mom’s new Jeep into a tree.��I made a vow to the Universe that I would NEVER drive a Jeep again.��NEVER EVER.

What three traits define you?
Quirky, humble��and open-minded. ����

How long have you been working for CU?
I have worked for CU since September of 2012.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Spending time with family, and exploring Colorado’s craft beer culture.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I received my PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification while in high school with the Garland Police Department in Texas. We learned the basics in a swimming pool, and then tested our skills in a large lake in East Texas. I enjoyed it a lot, but I have not yet had the opportunity to participate in an ocean dive. Hopefully soon!

What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime?
I have seen the world connect through the internet.��Worldwide communication is faster, easier��and cheaper than ever before.

What three traits define you?��
I think this question is best answered by my peers, so from one of my coworkers: “Words that define Jonathon Stevenson: considerate, capable��and dependable member of our Police Department team.”

Peak Form Medical Clinic, which has locations in �������� and Brighton, has been added to the University of Colorado's list of Designated Medical Providers. DMPs are the university-authorized medical providers from whom you may��seek treatment for ailments covered by workers compensation. CU maintains a full list of DMPs across the state .
