Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,
The colder weather this week has made me realize that we鈥檙e just six short weeks away from final exams for our students. Thank you all again for an absolutely phenomenal Fall semester. I have heard so many positive comments about students鈥 experience (along with faculty and staff) with returning to campus, and you all played a vital role in making that happen. I have said this many times and let me repeat it once again, People First, Mission Always. We cannot fulfill our mission without you!听听
Many of our units in I&S are looking to fill positions right now, some from recent departures and some left open from the pandemic. There are various factors to why people choose to work in one place versus another. Pay and the type of work are, of course, high on that list. The way each of us feels in terms of respect, belonging and fairness is also a significant factor -- if not the most important. So it feels fitting that our campus has asked each of us to participate in the Campus Culture Survey during this time.听
As I noted last month, the survey opened Oct. 18, and to date 54 percent of our Infrastructure and Sustainability staff have completed it. I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to have your voice heard. The Campus Culture Survey is an excellent way for all of us to express our lived experiences in the workplace so that we as a university can identify both our strengths and areas for improvement as we strive to create a just, equitable and inclusive culture at CU 海角社区.
From personal experience, I understand and can relate to how someone may feel ostracized, uncomfortable, misunderstood or feel like they are not part of the team or community. It may be because I am Asian, my military background or because I was poor growing up. I know that every single one of us, without exception, has had some type of negative experience in their lifetime, whether it was here on campus or somewhere else.听听听
Self-reflection isn鈥檛 easy, especially for a large organization like a university. The Campus Culture Survey isn鈥檛 the type of feedback opportunity most large organizations provide. It is imperative that we hear from our people to understand what you are experiencing, what we鈥檙e doing well and how we can do better. The survey also provides a great reminder to each of us to be aware of how our words and actions affect those we work with each day.
We want this to be a great place to work for you and for all our future employees, maybe even your friends and family members. And it is through opportunities like the Campus Culture Survey that we can all have a voice in helping our campus live up to our ideals. Please take the time to give us your feedback.
The Campus Culture Survey is open through Nov. 21. I ask that managers and supervisors make sure your team members have time to take the survey. If someone needs an accommodation or help navigating the survey on a computer, our I&S Human Resources team can provide support.听
With gratitude for all you do,
David Kang, vice chancellor for Infrastructure and Sustainability
