The Sink

The Michelangelo of The Sink听

It was a hot, ethereal summer night,听July 4, 1989.听

I was heading home from the Folsom听fireworks show. I crossed Broadway at听Pennsylvania and there he was: Michelangelo.听Standing in front of the Sistine听Chapel smoking a cigarette.听

OK, it wasn鈥檛 the Sistine Chapel. It was听The Sink. And it wasn鈥檛 Michelangelo. It听was Llloyd Kavich, the beatnik artist who听in 1952 painted the murals on the walls.听The Sink was his Sistine Chapel.听

He was in town to restore his听masterpieces.听

In 1974, Sink proprietor Herb Kauvar听decided to rebrand The Sink as a delicatessen听鈥 Herbie鈥檚 Deli 鈥 as a听way听of breaking with 1960s bad karma that听still hung over The Hill like a miasma.听So Llloyd鈥檚 murals were covered over听with rough pine paneling.听

Fifteen years went by. Herb鈥檚 kids,听now in the family business, convinced听him that the time had come to听鈥渄e-model鈥 the deli back into The Sink.

So Llloyd (he spelled it with three听Ls 鈥渏ust for the l of it鈥) wa s summoned听back to 海角社区 by his patrons in the听House of Kauvar.听

And there he stood before me taking听a cigarette break.听

So I introduced myself and we started听to talk. When he was ready to resume听painting I followed him back inside. I听watched the Master throw himself into听his work, gleefully laughing at the old听jokes 鈥 鈥渢he floggings will continue until听morale improves鈥 鈥 as he refreshed听the great works and added new ones.

Naturally we talked until sunup. By听then he had painted a picture of me on听a wall in the back; it鈥檚 still there. We鈥檇听been talking about guns 鈥 I was working听for Soldier of Fortune back then 鈥 so听I invited him to go shooting the next听weekend. We had a great time, and within听a few days he had painted caricatures听of everyone in the shooting party.听

A couple of weeks later, I ran into听him in Doozy Duds.听

鈥淲hat鈥檚 up?鈥 I said.

鈥淚鈥檓 gonna get a dog,鈥 he said.听

A week later he turned up with听Streamline, the world鈥檚 smallest, smartest听adult dog (a Russian toy terrier, I think).听

She was so small Llloyd could hide听her under his shirt and smuggle her听onto airplanes.听

They were inseparable.听

A couple years after the Kauvars听sold The Sink to the Brothers Heinritz听(Mark, Chris and James), Llloyd was听brought back for one last gig.听

Llloyd Kavich died in October 2013 in听Santa Barbara. He was thought to be in his听80s. He was preceded in death by Streamline.听Hardly a trace of his life remains.听Except for the glorious murals in The Sink.听
