Undergraduate Certificates

The ATLAS Institute offers two undergraduate certificates, in Design Technologies and User Experience.

Design Technologies

The Certificate in Design Technologies provides a fundamental understanding of information technology and digital media production. Students will create work that develops their digital design skillset, all while being prompted to critically analyze the impacts of technology on society. The certificate consists of 4 courses (12 credit hours):

  • ATLS 2000, Meaning of Information Technology- A survey of the mutual influence of technology, media, and society. Equips students with an understanding of technological transformations in interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication.
  • ATLS 2001, Design Technologies: Toolkit- Introduces the fundamentals of creative design through digital media production. Students explore a number of disciplines including imaging, web development, animation, sound, & video production.
  • ATLS 2002, Design Technologies: Process- Introduces the foundational principles and practices of creative design. Emphasis on using creative problem-solving tools to produce innovative work, via lectures, discussions, and creative projects.
  • One additional 3-credit ATLAS Course- Choose from the list of core and elective courses available within the Creative Technology and Design program, available in a variety of topics.

User Experience

In collaboration with the Department of Information Science, the Certificate in User Experience gives students the skills and vision to reimagine how humans interact with technology. From crafting wireframes and prototyping to understanding user journeys and usability testing, students gain the expertise to design interfaces and experiences that delight and inspire.

The certificate consists of 4 courses (12 credit hours):

  • Students choose one introductory course:
    • ATLS 1100, Design Foundations-Introduces foundational principles, practices and methods of design. Engages with visual, computational, physical and auditory design practices
    • INFO 1121, Designing Interactions- Provides an introduction to human-centered design and the universal requirements of interactions with data, information and technologies.
  • ATLS 4620, User Experience Design 1- Teaches the end-to-end UX Design process. Students develop a professional design portfolio piece, understand contemporary UX design methodologies, and learn how to innovate when designing at scale.
  • ATLS 4720, User Experience Design 2- A deeper dive into research and prototyping practices as means of insight into user desires and preferences. Covers the adoption and execution of products across a variety of contexts within the global experience economy.
  • One UX Elective course- Students select any course from the list of eligible UX electives (see below):

Please note: Students enrolled in either the BS-CTD or CTD Minor are not eligible to enroll in the Design Technologies certificate program (but can enroll in the User Experience certificate.)
